Abstract
On Monday, February 6, 2023, the largest natural disaster in the history of Turkey and Syria took place, because an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 occurred in the morning at 4:17 local time near Gaziantep. Many people were buried under the rubble of buildings. During the next hours and days, this area was hit by a series of over 100 powerful aftershocks (the most intensive quake of 7.7-magnitude occurred several dozen kilometres to the north). Unfortunately, the scale of the damage is huge and more aftershocks threaten. The total death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria now stands at 50,000. According to data from mid-February 2023 more than 25,000 buildings have been destroyed in Turkey and the state of 170 thousand must be examined. Two phenomena of similar intensity, but registered at seismic stations located on two site classifications (A and B) according to EC-8, were selected for detailed analyses. The most precise way to estimate the dynamic response of irregular structures subjected to earthquakes is to create a 3D model and conduct a nonlinear response time history analysis. The building was measured to find its dynamic properties using different ways of excitation. The model was influenced by two chosen farfield representative events originating from strong ground motion caused by the last earthquake in Turkey. The results of the analysis indicated locations of structural damages and permit assessing the dynamic resistance of the structure.
