Abstract
Modernization and adaptive reuse of historical buildings is currently a popular global trend in the 21st-century architecture. This is not only conducive to preserving heritage, but is also environmentally friendly, especially in an era of climate catastrophe. It also provides an opportunity for impressive transformations that positively impact various aspects, encompassing enhancements in the aesthetics of buildings and spaces, while also elevating the usability and quality of the living environment for local communities. Undoubtedly, giving historical buildings a second life involves essential actions such as revitalization, expansion, partial demolition, or adaptive reuse. However, apart from restoration and repurposing, its fundamental essence lies in the designing and transforming these structures in a way that optimally serves both current and future generations for as long as possible. Consequently, the objective of the article is to showcase innovative architectural accomplishments in this domain, focusing on the latest projects in Poland completed between 2020 and 2023, recognized and awarded in prestigious architectural competitions. The analysis confirms that Polish achievements are evidence of growing dedication to comprehensive modernization and expansion with emphasis on both aesthetic appeal and functional suitability, all while preserving the historical significance of these structures. All of this represents the pursuit of discovering new aspects in perceiving historical architecture.
