Abstract
The aim of the study is the issue of revitalization of collective housing buildings erected in the technology of the so-called panel block buildings. This technology was particularly popular after the Second World War, but its pedigree goes back to pre-war Modernist architecture. Using prefabricated slabs allowed engineers to build very quickly a large number of apartments. An ITB report from 2018 confirmed that structurally, the panel block blocks in operation are safe, so there are no technical indications to demolish them. In the author’s opinion, the revitalization of panel block buildings is justified as a pro-social and pro-ecological idea. Architects have at their disposal a whole range of solutions (reduction of heat loss, modernization of installations, use of renewable energy sources), which should be adjusted on the basis of diagnostics including thermographic studies. European examples show that it is possible to improve the energy efficiency of blocks and consequently reduce CO2 emissions by up to 75%.
