Abstract
The paper presents the preliminary results of research on the level of light pollution in the form of artificial sky glow in the area of Beskid Mały in the Western Carpathians. This area, so far not covered by this type of analysis, is interesting for the researched issue, because it is located between such strong centres of light pollution as the Krakow Agglomeration and the Silesian Agglomeration on the one hand, and the partially light-protected area of the Żywiec Beskids. Regardless of the mobile measurements, stationary measurement points were set up on the northern slopes of the mentioned range, near the main urban centres in this area: Wadowice, Andrychów and Bielsko-Biała. In order to assess the amount of light pollution, both satellite data from the last ten years were used, as well as measurement data of the brightness of the night sky glow obtained using SQM meters in various atmospheric conditions. It was found that artificial light emitted from the areas of the mentioned cities, as well as their satellite towns, penetrates deep into the mountain areas of the Beskid Mały, but to a lesser extent than the model values would suggest. In addition, it was found that the degree of light penetration into such areas strongly depends on atmospheric conditions. In conditions of a clear sky this range is very large, but the brightness of the sky glow is then low. With the full cloud cover, the brightness of the sky glow is high, undoubtedly affecting local ecosystems, but the penetration of light is then limited to the immediate vicinity of the town. It is planned to establish further measurement points in the study area, which should help solve the problem of the impact of the terrain on model predictions of the brightness of the light glow.
