Bio-based carbonate erythritol and diamine derivatives of dimerized fatty acids as platform for the synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethanes

Abstract
One of the methods of synthesis of bis-five-membered cyclic carbonates may be the carbonization of tetraols of biological origin, and the obtained carbonates may be precursors in the preparation of isocyanate-free polyurethanes (NIPU). In this work, erythritol carbonate (EDC) was synthesized starting from butadiene tetraol, i.e. meso-erythritol used in everyday life as a sweetener. The structure and selected properties of EDC were confirmed by: FTIR, 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and determination of the melting point (DSC). Then, erythritol carbonate was a precursor for obtaining environmentally friendly isocyanate-free polyurethanes using the polyaddition reaction of cyclic EDC carbonate with a derivative of dimerized fatty acids (P1075). The NIPU synthesis was carried out by two methods: in bulk and in solvent. The effect of reaction conditions on the final product was compared using FTIR, TG and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. All prepared NIPUs were thermally stable up to ca. 200°C with the initial decomposition temperature (Tp) of 210 and 208°C for NIPU(solvent) and NIPU(bulk), respectively.
