Abstract
Diatomite is a material composed mainly of fossilized remains of diatoms. So far, it has been applied mainly as sorbents of petroleum substances and as fillers in paints and varnishes. On a smaller scale, this material has also been used in animal husbandry as a feed additive and an ingredient of fertilizers for agriculture. It should be noted that these areas of application did not fully exploit the potential of diatomite. It could have much wider applications when proper treatment is adapted. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the new possibilities of application of diatomite as a component for isolation materials in the construction industry. In the first step, the paper is focused on the results of thermal analysis of diatomite occurring in Poland in the Podkarpacie region. The obtained results can be a basis for the design of a proper thermal treatment for diatomite that influences its properties and create an innovative material for isolation purposes in the construction industry. Characteristic transformations related to temperature treatment are presented. The next step is the synthesis of a new material based on diatomite, and analysis of their basic properties, including the thermal conductivity of the diatomite aggregate, were presented. The main findings confirm the suitability of diatomite after thermal treatment as insulating fillings in the construction industry.
