Abstract
Small German towns with half-timbered buildings compete with each other, outdoing each other in ideas on how to attract tourists and possible future residents. The variety of conditions, resulting from the location, terrain, cultural distinctiveness and, above all, the existence of preserved historical buildings in each region, means that each town creates a unique atmosphere and a distinct identity. Germany and other European countries have recognized these values for centuries, and it is up to developers and municipal authorities to ensure that planned new developments and ideas are successful and promote economic development and promotion of the region or specific localities. The author’s research presented in the paper showcases the German town of Quedlinburg, which has authentic halftimbered buildings that have been built up over the centuries and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
