Abstract
Energy production and storage have become crucial issues in today's world when energy consumption is rapidly growing. Fossil fuels depletion requires further development in the field of renewable energy from sources such as sun, wind, and biomass. Key challenge that needs further research efforts is the design and fabrication of new advanced materials for efficient energy technologies, including batteries, solar cells, fuel cells, and phase-change materials for energy storage. These materials need to be fully characterized, and for thermal properties evaluation thermal analysis methods are an indispensable tool. In this chapter application of thermal analysis methods, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature-modulated DSC, thermogravimetry alone or coupled with other techniques for evolved gas analysis (infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry), as well as dynamic mechanical analysis, for characterization of organic and polymeric materials for photovoltaic and solar cells, electrolytes and batteries, phase-change materials for thermal energy storage, in biofuels and conventional fuels production processes, has been discussed.
