Abstract
Groundwater is the major source of water for drinking, irrigation, and industrial purposes in the arid and semi-arid regions of South India. This study aims to evaluate the quality of groundwater for drinking purposes using water quality index (WQI) and entropy water quality index (EWQI) values. A total of 53 samples were collected from densely populated areas and industrial zones in the semi-arid region of Tamil Nadu, India. The collected samples were analyzed for basic groundwater parameters by following the standards recommended by the American Public Health Association (APHA, 2005). The results revealed that calcium, magnesium, chloride, and nitrate are the major ions that highly dominate the quality of groundwater in the study region. The WQI results indicated that around 10% of the sample locations were highly contaminated in both the pre- and post-monsoon seasons. The EWQI values revealed that about 15% of the sample locations were polluted in both the pre- and post-monsoon seasons due to excessive concentrations of chloride and nitrate. This study identified the primary sources of contamination such as rock–water interaction, the nature of an aquifer, and other anthropogenic activities. The results help decision-makers enhance the quality of groundwater and reduce contamination in a specific region in order to maintain a sustainable practice in the study region.
