Abstract
Railway noise is a factor with an adverse influence on the life of human populations living at the vicinity of railway areas. In Europe, a particularly noticeable impact of railway noise is recorded in the countries with the highest population density, i.e. the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany. On the basis of its studies, the World Health Organisation (WHO) identified the ailments most often reported by people exposed to railway noise such as cardiovascular diseases, sleep disorders, hearing impairments and ear buzzing or continuous irritation. As the issue of noise emitted by means of transport in Europe affects several dozens of millions of people, most EU states have taken measures to reduce its impact on the environment. This article presents methods of transport noise reduction in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Poland, Switzerland and Sweden. It also presents changes made to TSI Noise (1304/2014). The sources of railway noise generated by conventional trains primarily include the wheel-rail engagement, thus regular grinding of rails helps reduce the pass-by noise by approx. 10 dB. The replacement of cast iron brake blocks in freight wagons with brake blocks made of composite materials helps reduce the noise by a further value of 5 dB. The article also presents other noise reduction methods. Analysing the noise reduction strategies of different states and watching the results of such measures, one may assume that approx. 70 of the human population will be protected against railway noise impacts over the next 10 years.
