Abstract
Diplomatic contacts established between the courts of Cosimo III de’ Medici, the grand duke of Tuscany, and John III, the king of Poland, after the victory in the Battle of Vienna resulted in the consignment of eight crates of plants being sent to Wilanów in 1684. Among the species recorded in historical sources were citrus trees, which in that period had a symbolic dimension, as they referred to the golden apples of the Hesperides. Having citrus trees in an orangery signified their owners' connection to the heroic virtues and the strength of Hercules. A tale of plants from nearly 340 years ago has helped to establish the cooperation between the Boboli Gardens managed by the Uffizi Gallery and the Museum of King John III's Palace at Wilanów. The resulting project, named "Citri et Aurea", is divided into three areas encompassing its the research, exhibition and conservation aspects. Its long-range aim is to recreate the Wilanów collection of citrus trees making use of historical varieties grown in Italy. The first stage of the project was completed in November 2019 within the framework of the assignment "Citri et Aurea": Exchange of Knowledge and Experience in the Field of Historical Citrus Collections, partially financed from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage programme "The Inspiring Culture". A study visit of three employees of the Wilanów Museum to Florence made it possible not only to extend their knowledge regarding the traditional methods of citrus growing, but also to carry out an inquiry into the correspondence dating from the period of King John's reign held in the State Archive, to develop a cooperation with the Uffizi Gallery, to establish contacts with new partners, and to conduct a successful promotion campaign of the Wilanów Gardens in Italy.
