Abstract
The "Citri et Aurea" Polish-Italian garden seminar was a special educational and promotional event organised online by the Museum of King John III’s Palace at Wilanów in collaboration with the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, which took place in the early September 2020 owing to partial financing from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage programme "The Inspiring Culture". The event was attended by eminent experts and practitioners working at various historical residences, who presented the achievements of both countries in the field of the conservation of historic gardens and citrus collections. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence was represented by Dr Bianca Maria Landi, a Boboli Gardens coordinator and curator of the botanical heritage, and arch. Paola Ruggieri, a curator of their architectural heritage, who gave a lecture on the conservation, protection and renovation of the Boboli Gardens. Gianni Simonti, a Boboli Gardens gardener and curator if its historical citrus collection, gave an account of the 470-year-old traditions of that collection from the perspective of the plants and architecture. Jacek Kuśmierski, a historic garden specialist at the Museum of King John III’s Palace at Wilanów, reported on the past and present of Wilanów’s citrus collection, whereas Łukasz Przybylak, the head of Garden Department, presented the history and the future perspectives regarding the renovation of the orangery garden. The delegate of the Nieborów and Arkadia Museum, Agnieszka Chmielewska from its Department of Greenery, gave a lecture on the facts and legends surrounding its citrus collection. The seminar closed with a presentation given by Beata Kańska, the head of the gardens at the Royal Łazienki Museum in Warsaw, who discussed the 250-year history of its orangery and citrustree collection. The "Citri et Aurea" garden seminar is an unique example of cooperation between Poland and Italy in the field of historical garden design, which will be continued in the following years in the areas of scholarly research, designing educational materials, and garden exhibitions.
