Abstract
Nowadays, geopolymer composites are one of the most promising environmental friendly alternative to traditional cementitious materials, including Portland cement in civil engineering. Main barrier for this applications is a brittle behaviour of this composites, which limits the application of this material. The admixture of proper fibres could limited it. Especially beneficial is a hybrid reinforcement. Currently, it is a little explored research area. Steel fibres combined with plastic fibres are most often used in this type of reinforcement. This paper presents the behaviour of sodium activators synthesized fly ash geopolymer with hybrid cotton and steel fibre reinforcement. This combination have not been investigated yet. The main aim of research is to examine the influence of the cotton and steel fibres on the flexural and compressive strength of a fly ash-based geopolymer composite. As raw material class F fly ash from the coal power plant ‘Skawina’ (located in: Lesser Poland, Poland) was used. The following research methods were applied: compressive strength and flexural strength tests after 28 days of curing, specimens density and microstructural analyses using SEM with EDS. The results show that the hybrid reinforcement can improve the mechanical properties of geopolymer composites.
