Abstract
The work presents corrosion of direct-bonded MgO-Cr refractory by three types of PbO-rich copper slags. Pellet test, contact corrosion test and hot stage microscopy test enabled to study corrosion phenomena at 1300 °C and 1450 °C, respectively. The structure and microstructure of the after-corrosion samples were deeply analyzed, with the former one aided by development of image detection algorithms. Slags infiltrated the refractory through open pores and cracks. Slag components diffused into refractory and changed its original composition. Forsterite solid solution, Mg2SiO4 s.s., which formed as the only corrosion product caused swelling of microstructure and disintegration of magnesia-chromite direct bonds, critical for the performance of refractory.
