Abstract
The geometry of the hip joint elements has been the main topic of multiple studies. Many different approaches have been proposed. In most cases, the research is focused only on one of the bones in the joint, either the femur or the pelvis. On the other hand, our research was focused on the interaction between the femur and the pelvis, with their geometry simplified into spheres. The bones then formed a simple sphere-sphere contact pair. The main aim of this study was to analyze how the different approaches to obtaining the spheres for the bones affects the obtained contact pair. In order to do it, we created fifty-six, contact pairs based on: five sets of computer tomography scans, four approaches to contact region selection and two sphere-fitting methods—with optimization and using a simplified, linearized approach. Furthermore, we also created three unique three-dimensional models from one medical set, but with different segmentation parameters. This allowed us to study and simulate the subjective aspects of medical image processing and their effect on the final biomechanical model. Our results indicated that the contact region selection had a major impact on the quality of the obtained contact pair. The best results were obtained when selecting a lunar-shaped patch on both the femur and the pelvis. Furthermore, subjective aspects of processing the medical scans also affected the results—the obtained pairs were of different geometry. In terms of the numerical approach to sphere fitting—the more general, optimizational approach resulted in better fit spheres.
