The role of a third body in fretting wear
Authors:
- Maciej Michnej
Abstract
One of the effects of fretting wear in a concentrated or flat contact is the formation of wear products, the so called "third body". Its role in further wear development is interpreted in different ways. The problem is more complex in the case of clamped joints, especially those made by forcing in. The wear products are formed already during the joint assembly. The article, on the basis of the author own experiments, discusses the mechanism of the third body formation in the contact area of the joined elements and the influence of the surface roughness and clamp value on its distribution along the joint. The influence of the third body formed during forcing in on the initiation and intensity of fretting wear is also discussed.
