Abstract
The wooden architecture of Zakopane, which developed intensively at the close of the nineteenth century and in the first decade of the twentieth century, is a phenomenon that differs from those in other regions. It is a synthesis of traditional culture of the gorals of Podhale and motifs derived from historic stylistics, transformed by Stanisław Witkiewicz into an original style in architecture and decoration. The Zakopane Style was adapted by successive generations of the inhabitants of Podhale who still consider it as their own. Moreover, it is still a pattern and model for architects and designers. In new buildings in Zakopane one may observe various forms of buildings—creative interpretations of the style, controversial ones, or ones with superficial ties to tradition. The continued persistence of Witkiewicz’s ideas is inscribed into the cultural category of “invented tradition,” understood as processual and subject to transformations and reinterpretation.

W nowych realizacjach w Zakopanem można zaobserwować rozmaite formy budynków – twórcze interpretacje stylu, realizacje kontrowersyjne albo powierzchownie nawiązujące do tradycji. Długie trwanie idei Witkiewicza wpisuje się w kulturową kategorię „tradycji wynalezionej”, rozumianej procesualnie, podlegającej przekształceniom i reinterpretacji.
