Abstract
This work addresses the annual and long-term variability of the highest monthly sums of atmospheric precipitation in the urbanized areas in the foreland of the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathians. Studies are based on the previous publication of the authors and the climate variability research in the area (Twardosz & Cebulska 2014; Twardosz et al. 2016; Kholiavchuk & Cebulska 2019; Twardosz & Cebulska 2020). The input data are the monthly sums of atmospheric precipitation at 6 meteorological stations in the years 1984-2016 from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute and from the Central Geophysical Observatory of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. The frequency and amount of the highest monthly precipitation totals in individual months were assessed, including the six-month (May to October) warm period at each station. The significance of the trend of the highest monthly precipitation totals is addressed using the commonly used Mann-Kendall test (Kendall 1975; Kholiavchuk & Cebulska 2019). Precipitation quantiles are also calculated on the basis of distributions of theoretical maximum values. Theoretical distributions were adopted: normal, lognormal, Weibull, Pearson type III and the Gumbel distribution. Based on the AIC (Akaike Information Criterion) criterion, the theoretical distribution that best reflects the empirical distribution of the highest monthly sums of precipitation is defined. In the long-term course of the highest monthly precipitation totals, there are irregular fluctuations. High variability of the highest monthly rainfall from year to year is noticed in Krakow and Chernivtsi. In the years 1984-2016, the highest monthly sums of rainfall in all stations occurred in July, except for Lviv, where the highest rainfall occurred in May. Then monthly sums of precipitation accounted for over 200% of the long-term average. Only two times (in July 2000 and August 2006), the highest monthly sums of precipitation occurred simultaneously in all meteorological stations though it was not the highest amount in the 33-year period at each station. In September 1996, not only was the highest rainfall in Ukraine, but also in south-eastern Poland. Such high monthly sums include heavy daily rainfall, the occurrence of which in many regions was the cause of local floods, and even regional floods. For example, in 2010, in Krakow, the precipitation amount occurred on 1-24.05, was 269.7 mm that was over 330% of the long-term average. Such intense daily sums of precipitation in areas with a high degree of urbanization cause local flooding and even damage to the environment, including buldings and transport infrastructure. The similar effect was caused by rainfall in July 2008 at Ivano-Frankivsk, Kolomiya and Chernivtsi.
