Abstract
New generation materials are more commonly used in civil engineering as they allow for repairing or healing of cracks and micro-cracks in concrete. The paper presents possibility of application of Polymer Flexible Joint (PFJ) as a structural repair method, improving concrete structure load capacity after application and enhancing ductility by reducing stress concentrations in the concrete component. The aim of this paper is to describe the influence of application of such joints on concrete beams, examined in 4-point bending tests before and after repair. The article presents the idea of using of the Polymer Flexible Joints in civil engineering and describes mechanical properties of polymer. Experimental investigations were conducted to determine the behaviour of concrete specimens connected with PFJ in 4-point bending test. The influence of the flexible joint on repaired concrete beams is described, particularly taking into consideration the stress redistribution in concrete, responsible for reduction of stress concentrations. The application of flexible joint has a positive influence on load capacity of connected concrete elements. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that PFJ repaired structure gained ductility and can bear larger deformations.
