Wind turbine model with PIC microcontroller power control

Abstract
This paper presents a novel control system design for the wind turbine model with PIC microcontroller power control system. The system uses Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) for wind power generation to generate electricity. For controlling power generation process the system applies microcontrollers PIC operating in multitasking mode. The proposed PIC controlled DFIG not only provides a low cost solution to todays electric power needs, but also is aimed at delivering better power quality, making it ideally suited for wind energy conversion systems operating at variable wind speeds and connected to variable and often dynamic utility loads. Power quality improvement is achieved by cancellation of the largest and the most annoying harmonics in the supply grid. Additionally, power factor correction and adaptive response to variable reactive loading are also addressed in this design. The proposed design involves two current-controlled power converters connected through a slip ring assembly. The rotor control is achieved using a commercially available PIC controller employing a position, field oriented control algorithm. Some preliminary simulation efforts and modeling scenarios are also presented.
