Abstract
This chapter focuses on discussing the cross-linking reaction of the typical binder compounds commonly applied in the polymer coating systems, such as epoxy, polyester, phenol-formaldehyde, amino-formaldehyde, alkyd and vinyl resins, polyurethanes and acrylates. The course of cross-linking reaction and conditions of these processes and commonly used curing agents are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on discussing various cross-linking mechanisms, including processes involving the reaction of functional groups of a polymer binder and a hardener, polymerization and copolymerization reactions involving double bonds, ring-opening polymerization and photo- and ionic polymerization. The advantages and disadvantages of particular cross-linking methods, in terms of the conditions of carrying out the curing process and the final properties of the cured material, are listed.
