The truth and imperfection – exploring the meaning of modern architecture

Abstract
This paper attempts to formulate an answer to the question of the meaning of truth in modern architecture. The analysis presented here follows selected philosophical and theoretical concerns regarding both architecture and the truth notions – starting from ancient Greek philosophy up to modern times. It acknowledges the viewpoint of postmodern philosophers: that the truth is a rather useless concept and, nevertheless tries a romantic and critical alternative. It poses a question whether the original modern concept of truth referring to formal parameter of architecture (structural, expressive and historical truth) is relevant with the meaning of truthfulness as seen in a broader context of nowadays architecture. Answering it proposes the more complex 3-component idea of truthfulness of architecture extended upon how the building is made, how it is used and what it represents.
