Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the sun-protection activity of the selected plant extracts. Comparison of radiation protection activity was made for the following plant extracts: green tea (Camellia Sinensis Extract), Chinese lemon fruit (Schizandra Chinensis Fruit Extract), sea buckthorn fruit (Hippophae Rhamnoides Extract), root of the Baikal thyroid (Scutellaria baicalensis root extract), bark of common buckthorn (Frangulae cortex Extract), elderberry (Sambucus Nigra Extract), sand elm (Helichrysum Stoechas Extract), angelica root (Radix Angelica sinensis Extract), Arnica Montana Extract and horsetail herb (Equisetum Arvense Extract). The assessment of sun-protection properties was made by measuring the spectra of the tested samples by spectrophotometry in the UV light range. In addition, antioxidant properties were measured using the DPPH method for the tested extracts, and the total polyphenol content was determined. Green tea and buckthorn bark extracts have been shown to be richest in polyphenolic compounds, while the lowest concentration of polyphenols was characteristic for sea buckthorn fruit. The highest ability to scavenge free radicals was found in extracts from green tea, Chinese lemon fruit, Baikal thyroid root and common buckthorn bark. Sea buckthorn fruit extract showed the weakest activity. Green tea and common buckthorn extracts also absorbed UV light the most efficiently. Therefore, these extracts have a high potential for use in skincare preparations with a radiation effect, as well as protecting against free radicals.
