Abstract
The Cracow Fortress is highly attractive from a cognitive point of view; from an academic, through a popular scientific, to an anecdotal and digressive perspective aligned with the tourist image of cities and regions, and often from a standpoint that defines this image. The Fortress was the work of multiple nations and multiple nations it has served. It is the object of interest of tourists (ca. 160 thousand per year, without any promotional encouragement). In Europe, the phenomenon of industrial and military tourism is developing and is gaining and increasing number of enthusiasts. One of the gates to the Cracow Fortress and thus to Lesser Poland’s military and industrial tourism, is Bation III, located in the center of the city. This paper presents the consequences of the process of repairing and adapting this structure in studies, conceptual proposals, designs, construction reports and a chronological list of documents and other works – as a record of an example of a several-decades-long process of restoring a preserved, yet heavily modified engineering structure from the middle of the nineteenth century
