Morphology, dynamics, and order development in a thermoplastic polyurethane with melt blended POSS

Abstract
A top-down approach is applied for the production ofpolyurethane (PU)–polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)nanocomposites, namely melt blending. As opposed to the typicalchemical incorporation during synthesis, a POSS moiety with twohydroxyl groups is melt blended into a commercial thermoplasticpolyurethane with mass fraction up to 2 wt %. POSS disperses in thematrix in submicrometer-sized crystals, as well as in length scale offew tens of nanometers, in the bulk. Phase separation of the producedcomposites was studied by both standard dynamic and isothermalannealing experiments. In an approach rare in the literature, thedynamics of phase separation is discussed based on isothermaldifferential scanning calorimetry curves recorded duringannealing. The blended-in nanoparticles affect the micromor-phology in a complicated manner, dependent on the intrinsicallycomplex phase separation mechanism of PU. At higher tempera-tures, POSS slows down the phase separation, whereas at lowerones, it enhances and accelerates it. POSS decreases themechanical modulus of thefinal material, presumably as a resultof changes in the microphase separation.
