Probability-based remaining service time prediction for corroded shell of a steel tank used for liquid fuel storage

Abstract
A simplified procedure to estimate the remaining service time of a steel tank used to store the liquid fuel is presented in this paper. The detailed considerations pertain to a cylindrical shell with vertical axis constituting the bearing structure of the on the ground storage tank with floating roof. The effective thickness of this shell decreases in time due to the progressive corrosion process of a random character. Thus at the same time the probability of failure due to the capacity of the considered shell to safely resist the loads applied getting exhausted increases. In the considerations presented by the Authors the hitherto intensity of the corrosion process is evaluated based on the measurements of the random shell thickness, performed a’priori, after various periods of tank service time, usually during the periodic assessments of its technical condition, and available in the documentation. The trend obtained in this manner is then extrapolated to the future service time of the analyzed structure, under the assumption that the future mode and conditions of service would remain unchanged, and the structure will not undergo modernization.
