Seismic assessment of a U-beam composite material footbridge under earthquake sequence

Abstract
Over the past few decades, fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in general and glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) in particular have become popular and competitive solutions in the construction of bridge objects. Because of their properties – such as high strength to weight ratios, ease of structure assembly, non-conductivity and chemical resistance – significant applications ofthe composite materials have been realized in the construction offootbridges in particular. In this paper, the investigation ofthe dynamic response ofa GFRP footbridge to foreshock, a mainshock and an aftershock seismic sequence is delivered. For the aim ofthe study the finite element (FE) model was prepared with theABAQUS/Standard software program. The seismic events with three components were taken into account in the numerical simulation. For the evaluation of seismic-induced failures in the composite materials footbridge, the Hashin failure theory was applied.
