Abstract
This article discusses the application of concrete as a very important building material in the process of adaptation, extension and modernisation of historic objects. Attention should be drawn to the fact that the value of concrete is not only connected with such properties as endurance, permanence, resistance to corrosion, and malleability, but also with the aesthetic dimension affected by its natural colour and texture. Those properties make concrete an excellent "link" between "the old" and "the new". The presented analysis was carried out on the examples of three conservation realisations from the Portuguese city of Porto: Praça de Lisboa; Casa dos 24 by the cathedral, and the downtown quarter of Das Cardosas.
