Abstract
Slinky-coil ground heat exchangers have become very popular as they require less land space than con-ventional straight ones. They have a number of advantages, including the ease of assembly and the pos-sibility of obtaining high density of coils arrangement. This paper presents the results of experimentalinvestigations of heat transfer between hot water flowing through a slinky-coil heat exchanger and theground in which it is placed. A coil with a diameter of 1 m was situated under the surface of the ground. The water temperature at the inlet and outlet of the exchanger and the temperature of the ground at dif-ferent levels and at different distances from the exchanger were measured. An analytical solution (RingSource Model) was used to analyse the measurement results. Good qualitative compatibility of the resultsof experimental studies and numerical simulations has been shown. Quantity compliance was obtainedby adjusting the model parameters to the measurement results – the estimated parameters were thermalproperties of the ground, i.e. thermal diffusivity and volumetric heat capacity. The standard deviationamounts to 0.9 K. It was found that the overall heat transfer coefficient in the tested system is approx.116 W/(m2K). Simulation calculations of the ground temperature maps and profiles in the ground witha exchanger with multiple coils were also carried out.
