Abstract
In the paper there was examined the variability of the drought periods with various intensity, that occurred in the area of Polish Eastern Carpathians. The spells of atmospheric drought were selected on the basis of the sums of monthly, seasonal and annual precipitation. Given sums of monthly rainfalls successively from the years 1984-2015 from 6 measuring points located in the research area were obtained from the generally accessible database of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB). The identification and the frequency assessment of the lowest monthly, seasonal and annual precipitation were made in the individual measuring stations in the subsequent years as well as in the whole period of the studies. The spells with precipitation deficit were selected while taking into account the commonly used criterion of the atmospheric drought identification, including, among the others, Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) (McKee et al.,1993), Relative Precipitation Index (RPI) (Łabędzki, 2006) and probability for not exceeding the precipitation (Miętus et al., 2005). The lowest sums of the monthly precipitation occur during the whole year except June. Whereas, the precipitation occurs the most frequently from October to January – in total in these months in the area of studies there occurred 67% of the lowest sums of the monthly precipitation. In the individual measuring stations the number of spells with the precipitation below 75% of the multi-year average is varied – in case of very dry periods on average 1-2 months in the station may be considered as very dry. Whereas, the dry spells in this area occur 2-3 months in a year, and on average every 2 year there is an extreme dry month. Within the sums of the annual precipitation in all stations except the measuring station in Szczawne the dry years with various intensity were over 30%. In the area of studies while considering the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for the identification of drought spells, an extreme dry month i.e. the one to which is matched by the precipitation with the probability of not exceeding 2% turned out to be July 1994, September 1986, October 1995, and November 2011. Whereas, an extreme dry spell turned out to be summer in 2015, and also autumn in 1986.
