Abstract
One of the most import ant stages of the research on the history and spatial development of cities is the analysis of their archival cartography . Historical plans are stored in various revervoirs. Mainly in the National Archive but also in regional museums and libraries. However, the plans are archived outside of the country as well. Such documents come from the period when Poland was under occupation. 39 This article presents an analysis of the historical cartography of Szczakowa, a place which was located in the area of Austrian Partition – Galicia. In the second half of the eighteenth century and in the nineteenth century, at the request of the Austrian authorities several maps were developed. They are of fundamental importance to the studies described. These are the Topographic Map of the Kingdom of Galicia and Londomeria from 1779 ‒1783 (in the literature referred as the Map of Mieg, first military photo) , the Map of Western Galicia (so called the Map of Heldensfeld ), the Map of Galicia and Bukovina from 1861 ‒ 1864 (second military photo) and the map of the Austro Hungarian Monarchy from 1869 ‒ 1887 (third military photo). Especially important was the emergence of the Galician cadastral plans – Kataster Gruntowy Galicji (metryka józefińska and metryka franciszkańska). These included both urban, and rural areas. Over the years, they have been frequently used as a basis for f urther mapping. Today they are still a valuable source of the information concerning the history and spatial development of the former Galician towns. The query and the analysis of the archival cartography, during the process of learning about the history of the spatial development of cities, are of prime importance. For example, this knowledge may be used in the contemp orary conversation policy or in the creation of local spatial development plans.
