Abstract
Life in a city gives to man a new range of opportunities, better wages, higher culture. However at the same time it moves him away from the natural environment and forces to change the lifestyle. Currently about 3,5 billion people live in urban areas, which is 50% of the world’s population. Statistics predict that by the year of 2050 this proportion will increase to 80%. Is the vision of present and future gigacities prepared for that amount of residents? The author of the article presents the American City of Detroit, which once was a great fulfillment of an American Dream and now is a half-abandoned first big-city bankrupt. What was the reason for this change after only 50 years? What action could help to transform this ideological machine-city once again into a well-functioning urban organism, that could attract human in terms of culture, society and economy. Referring inter alia to Jahn Gehl research and the movie “The Human Scale” directed by Andreas Dalsgaard (2013), the author takes a reflection on the future gigacities public space. What determines the attractiveness and quality of use of human environment? Extensive analysis of space and human behavior allows us to determine an approximate term of a “scale of happiness” used in the city. On the examples of New York, Christchurch the author presents several actions, which gradually implement a single man scale into the city jungle. Those make them clearly more attractive and likely to be visited. The article also present examples of the fastest growing cities in the world, which are located in Asia. Their development is still subordinated to the machine, overlooking the aspect of the residents. What means should be used by creating a human-friendly environment in order to avoid lowering the life standards in the future gigacity?

- Życie w mieście daje człowiekowi nowy wachlarz możliwości, lepsze zarobki, wyższą kulturę. Równocześnie jednak oddala go od środowiska naturalnego i zmusza do zmiany stylu życia. Jakie środki zapewniają mu swobodę i komfort życia?
