Abstract
Act of communal building of individual houses or settlements is associated with the European building tradition and the importance of this process for the development of local communities is well known. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century professionalization of the building professions, however, led to a significant reduction of popularity of construction on the principles of self-help or self-build methods. Today we may observe the renewal of self-build tradition, which is often connected with social aims exceeding the need of providing a shelter. The article focuses on case studies related to such type of building due to specific information carried by them as well as huge variety of their possibilities and limitations. Article’s topic is limited to schemes/realisations aiming to build the new housing developments, where work of the tenants at the building site was crucial for the investment. At the same time the investment was designed to consciously create the local community. The feature that influenced the choice of examples was also the high importance of public funds for the investment. Such selection of examples has in view drawing the conclusions that would become a contribution to searching for the rules and system solutions.

- Abstract in Polish
Dziewiętnasto- i dwudziestowieczna profesjonalizacja zawodów budowlanych doprowadziła jednak do znacznego zmniejszenia popularności sposobu budowy metodą gospodarczą (ang. self-build), czyli opartą na zasadach samopomocy.
