Abstract
The article addresses the issue of “homeliness” in architecture in the context of efforts made by the Polish intelligentsia: politicians, artists, scientists and economic activists, who during the partitions attempted to maintain the national identity and to save the broadly understood Polish culture and its heritage. The most spectacular manifestation of human creativity – architecture – was to play the fundamental role in realising that positivist and, in the words of Norman Davies: “Polish educational project”, by seeking characteristic features of the legacy left in Polish space by previous generations. The Zakopane style, the manorial style or the Vistula gothic were attempts at fi nding a “national style” which, after regaining independence, was to give our villages, towns and cities a new expression based on continuing the regional and local construction traditions. It was also an inter-disciplinary discussion preceding great social-economic and political projects planned for Reborn Poland. Villages, towns and cities – what is the condition of Polish cultural space today? What has remained of the ideas from one hundred years ago and more, and can we talk today about the effective protection of that space and the architectonic and urban heritage that exists in it?

- Abstract in Polish
- Artykuł podejmuje problem „swojskości” w architekturze w kontekście wysiłków polskiej inteligencji: polityków, artystów, naukowców, działaczy gospodarczych, którzy w dobie rozbiorów podejmowali wysiłki w kierunku utrzymania tożsamości narodowej i ratowania szeroko pojętej kultury polskiej i jej dziedzictwa. Wieś, miasteczko i miasto.
