Abstract
Universities generate thousands of journeys every day, which affects the traffic conditions in the city. At the same time, they have the possibility to implement the EU transport policy effectively, as they are responsible for decisions regarding the management of the university area, providing infrastructure and services on campuses, work time and classes organisation. In addition, universities play a key role in the education of citizens and future professionals, and the knowledge as well as values gained in the educational process (including sustainable mobility) spread in the society. This paper deals with the issue of university mobility. It presents the results of the research carried out in Krakow in terms of students’ mobility. The results show that cars do not play a major role in trips made to the universities by students living in the city, but they often use them for other purposes, not related to education. A very low percentage of students use a bicycle. In turn, the car is used in almost 40% of trips made by students living outside the city. The paper indicates best U- MOB LIFE project practices that can allow universities in Krakow to influence the students’ travel behaviour, including the increase in public transport, bike and walking trips and decrease in CO2 emissions. Proposed activities cover various aspects, including the curricular system. The aim of the ‘European Network for Sustainable Mobility at University’, which was established in the framework of the U-MOB LIFE project, is also presented.
