Abstract
Dry electrodischarge machining (dry EDM) can be an alternative to traditional electrodischarge machining with liquid dielectric. This process has many advantages over ‘traditional’ EDM and under ideal machining conditions allows to obtain a very good accuracy and surface layer quality. It is also worth to underline that dry EDM is environmental frie ndly process. Regardless to mentioned advantaged, dry EDM is not commonly used in the industrial applications because it is still a challenge to find an effective way to dissipate heat from the machining gap in order to obtain machinin g reliability (i.e. s atisfied process efficiency). In the paper the results of dry EDM drilling of austenitic steel X5CrNi 1810 in the air and in the air in the deionized water environment are presented. The goal of these primary tests was to determine an influence of gap volt age, current intensity, pulse on time, pulse off time and the type of electrodes’ polarization on the material removal rate, working electrode wear and workpiece surface structure. Obtained results indicate that application of water environment during dry EDM significantly improve process efficiency.
