Abstract
The cogging torque of permanent magnet (PM) machines is unwanted phenomenon. Its reduction during the development process is an engineering challenge. One common method used in machines with surface mounted PMs is the application of skewed stator slots or skewed PMs and the axial shift of the PM segments. The presented paper concerns the evaluation of the efficiency of the cogging torque reduction methods. Using the Ansys Maxwell 3D platform the authors implemented a finite-element model of an exemplary motor, and performed the analysis of five design scenarios leading to a reduced cogging torque solution and its impact on the induced electromotive force.
