Abstract
The scope of the study was to identify social factors influencing significant transformations of the landscape in south-eastern Poland, with particular emphasis on the rural areas of the Podkarpackie Province. The research methodology included quantitative social research (CAPI) performed in selected villages regarding the perception of tall trees in the immediate neighbourhood of respondents' residence site (house, street). An archival query on cartographic and iconographic materials of selected settlements enabled to execute the comparative analysis to determine the degree of landscape transformation. Collected materials indicate significant changes in the Podkarpackie countryside in terms of tall trees frequency. The gradual dissent of the traditional principles of shaping the immediate dwellings surroundings started after the World War II. This process continues, and as the study shows due to the specific spatial development of the analyzed settlements, interrupted continuity of traditions and modern legislative conditions a return to native, wooded cultural landscapes seems to be impossible in the nearest future (25 - 50 years).
