Abstract
The fermentation substance (digestate) is a by-product produced in agricultural biogas plants in the process of anaerobic methane fermentation of biomass in the amount of 85–95% of the mass of substrates used. 1 MW agro biogas plant generates up to 30,000 t of digestate per year. Digestate is most commonly used as fertilizer, containing 2–3% of total nitrogen. As the fermentation process contributes to the destruction of pathogens, their amount in the fermentation is considerably lower than in the raw material. The characteristics of the digestate indicate that it is the source of organic matter necessary for the proper functioning of the soil environment and contains mineralized forms of macro and micronutrients directly absorbed by the plants. Concentrated digestate is used as fuel, either directly after drying or after granulation (pellets and briquettes). The pellets from the post-fermentation have a calorific value of about 15 MJ/kg, with a moisture content of 9.9%. However, obtaining pellets from digestate sludge, due to large water ballast is not cheap. Ash from burned pellets containing phosphorus and potassium can be used in agriculture for fertilization.

- Substancja pofermentacyjna (poferment, dygestat) to produkt uboczny powstający w biogazowniach rolniczych, w procesie beztlenowej fermentacji metanowej biomasy, w ilości 85–95% masy użytych substratów. Agrobiogazownia o mocy 1 MW wytwarza rocznie do 30 000 t pofermentu.
