Effect of cold rim on extent and type of concrete fire spalling

Abstract
The research focuses on the investigations of cold rim effect on spalling intensity. Cold rim is non heated zone of concrete element that act as restraint and introduces the stresses that may influence spalling intensity and its type. The tests on fire spalling propensity of slabs made with seven different concrete compositions showed greater cracking of cold rim and more spalling for concretes characterized by higher compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, but also lower permeability. This paper summarizes the results obtained for seven concretes with respect of cold rim observations. Moreover, the effect of the cold rim thickness on spalling behavior is investigated on different size specimens subjected from one side to small flame. Two concrete compositions and three sizes of specimens are tested. While running the test, the temperature distribution is recorded using digital infrared thermal imaging and the strain distribution was evaluated using digital image correlation. The results shows that presence of cold rim and its thickness may affect the extent and intensity of concrete spalling. Also it is observed that when cold rim cracks, the pop-corn type of spalling is limited but the explosive one take place instead.
