Abstract
A project with the aim of recommending a simple small-scale method for ranking the propensity of concrete mixes to spall during fire exposure is ongoing. From the first phase of the project the following conclusions were drawn, (i) spalling results from large slab specimen tested without load or restraint cannot be used for a general assessment of spalling beyond the reinforcement layer if loads or restraints are expected in the real case, (ii) no clear trend in spalling intensity between concrete mixes with w/c 0.33 (compressive strength of 79 MPa) and w/c 0.4 (compressive strength 51 MPa), except in the case of the restraining ring method showing no spalling of the higher w/c mix. The reason for the lack of clear trend might be that we are in a region over a certain critical moisture level for all specimens.
