Abstract
The city is a multi-layered structure. However, above all, the city is about the people. As an urban structure it should create a comfortable space for the residents. Bind their subjective spaces together, connect the new with the existing. Considerations over the city can be conducted on a different scale of accuracy, e.g., regional – where the city occurs as an element in the network of links with the environment. However, the city can be considered as an independent body by analysing the system of its public spaces and internal connections. In the human scale it is the public scale that is the image of the city in our eyes. The squares, streets, parts remain as an imprint in our memory – a mental map. The attention to this element of the urban structure is the responsibility of many specialists, including architects, urban planners, but also sociologists, social psychologists and designers. The public space for the residents is a symbol of their identity. It changes over time as does it surrounding. Sometimes it is subject to gentrification, sometimes this change means the fall an degradation. This is due to many factors. Transformations of squares, streets, districts require the involvement not only of the designers, but most of all of all recipients and its users. Social participation at the basic level of the urban structure, that is determining its nearest space, joins the residents, creates their unique space with which they identify and to which they give their own identity. Inspiring such activities interwoven into the teaching process fulfils the twofold task. It teaches respect for the customer’s expectations, and it inspires the user of the space and broadens the view on the surrounding space.

- Abstract in Polish
- Miasto to struktura wielowątkowa. Miasto jednak to przede wszystkim ludzie. Inspirowanie do takich działań wplecione w proces dydaktyczny spełnia dwojakie zadanie. Naucza respektowania oczekiwań odbiorcy a użytkownika przestrzeni inspiruje i poszerza spojrzenie na otaczającą przestrzeń.
