Abstract
The landscapes we live in are social and cultural interpretations of nature. They represent the living archive of humankind’s technological and social development in it’s strive to adapt itself to natural circumstances. As such, landscape resilience is crusial to people’s livelihoods, and it will provide answers to both, socio-economic needs as well as ecological issues.”These are the opening words of the Learning from Landscapes, a resolution which refers to landscape as a permanent lesson, the source of knowledge and memory and, at the same time, the basis of further development. A belief that it is necessary to learn from landscape was the topic discussed during IFLA EU meeting in Lisbon. Representatives of different countries presented their experience and deeply-rooted methods to benefit from landscape resources. A way of using and cultivating landscape that follows its creation and regulations was demonstated in various forms from different parts of Europe. The role of landscape as a storage medium of experience of yet another generation was stressed as it was built in the natural characteristics of landscape, i.e. its changeability and it created this process by giving direction to those changes. The aspect of continuity, tradition continuum was clearly outlined as well as discovery of bottomless multithreaded treasury in landscape as such. It is a response to an increasing number of needs of the society since the essence of lanscape lies in its belonging. It is first and foremost a common good while its quality and condition impacts the lives of its inhabitants. A mutual confrontation outlined the conclusions indicating that success of the common activity calls for an agreement and clearly marked common goals. An agreement with regard to appropriate management requires recognition and understanding that leads to common consciousness of landscape in all its aspects. And it might be the consciousness that will be the condition for creating the balance between particular factors that comprise landscape itself.
