Abstract
Activities described in this work focus on the so-called ‘strategic landscape’, understood as a large-scale arrangement of space for the purposes of defence. This article presents a review of activities currently being carried out in Poland to restore the strategic landscapes with the regard to eras and fortification systems. Study only mentions a fraction of Poland’s fortification heritage. The key to the selection was to indicate fortified objects and complexes where much effort has been made to renovate them and make them available, in a systemic way, to the contemporary public. Chosen examples of restoration of military architecture monuments show a comprehensive, systemic, nationwide approach, which results from over fifty years of research and practical experience of fortification heritage and landscape protection and rehabilitation in Poland. The objective of this approach is to enhance the attraction of former fortification through restoration, while the desired outcome is to improve the life quality of local communities through introducing a clear spatial organisation and creating jobs in tourism. The strategic landscape, which once was shaped with significant effort and resources to ensure a sense of social security, is now often waning in isolation from social perception, acceptance, or care. This is why this review stresses the significance of NGOs, social organisations and contemporary uses for the adapted locations, viewing them as an opportunity not just for the objects themselves but also for the local communities.
