Abstract
Changes in the way urban spaces are used, particularly changes in functions of urban struc-tures and units in historic cities, constitute an imminent consequence of progress. Historic build-ings very often have – besides the historic one – also great artistic value. Sometimes abandoned for decades, or used only partially, they are not able to fulfil their initial functions. This results from many reasons, most of all from changing standards, as well as different social needs and expectations. It should not be forgotten that warfare, which did not omit European cities located in the Mediterranean over the last two thousand years, left damaged fragments of the architec-tural tissue. Used differently than designed, or disassembled for the purposes of erecting new buildings, these structures frequently have a unique architectural value. Today more and more often they get adapted to new functions. Thanks to this, whatever is left of them, can be main-tained for the years to come, instead of being subjected to further degradation, which is con-sistent with the philosophy of sustainable development. Many structures, abandoned by their previous users (industry, army, secular and church institutions) for different reasons seem to be particularly predestined to be adapted for the purposes of culture, which is demonstrated in a number of European projects. This paper presents several examples of such projects from Bar-celona, a city from the circle of the Mediterranean culture, aspiring to the position of a ‘global city’.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawionych zo-stanie kilka przykładów takich realizacji z Barcelony, miasta kręgu kultury śródziemnomorskiej, aspirującego do pozycji „miasta globalnego”.
