Abstract
Safe and economic design of steel cylindrical shells according to European Standard EN 1993-1-6 very often requires a global numerical non-linear analysis. The plastic collapse load resulting from a materially non-linear analysis is to be determined then in many cases. It seems, however, that an extraction of the true plastic strength still is a relatively complex matter in a numerical analysis. In this paper the modified Southwell plot and also the plot between load factor increment and the arc length were used for an evaluation of the plastic collapse resistance of a steel cylindrical shell. The results of the finite element analysis (FEA) demonstrate that the modified Southwell plot provides accurate and unique results for shells under simple set of loads where the collapse pattern can be clearly identified. In turn, the formal assessment of the plastic strength for shells under complex loading conditions may require the application of both the modified Southwell plot and the method that allows for a clear identification of the plastic collapse mechanism. Here a proposal of an employment of the relation between the load factor increment and the arc length, which permits to track the structural response of the whole shell during the progress of the numerical computations, was made. The relation allows for an approximate identification of the initiation of the plastic collapse mechanism. Then the modified Southwell plot can be applied to points of the shell with peak straining corresponding to the indicated collapse pattern. The above findings also suggest that the approximate value of plastic strength of the shell could be directly extracted from the above mentioned plot of the load factor increment vs. the arc length.
