Abstract
In order to achieve the correct modelling, design and construction of geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) systems, it is necessary to define in a precise way the mechanical parameters occurring in the geosynthetics subject to bearing loads. This article presents the results of the first works carried out using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) which allows for a contactless determination of displacements and strains in the specimens of geosynthetics. The article also demonstrates the finite element model of tensile tests of geosynthetics using the wide-width strips method. A comparison was made of the results of the laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The results of the conducted research and analyses indicate that the DIC method is an effective tool for assessing the parameters of geosynthetics used, for ex., in GRS systems. With using of the DIC method it is possible to analyse deformations in any direction and at any point on the surface of the geosynthetic. The applied measuring method also opens possibilities for validating numerical models of geosynthetics produced using the finite element method (FEM).
